Are you saying that the only reason anyone would buy an mp3 player other than an ipod is because they can't afford an ipod?

No, I never said that. Price is not a differentiating factor here since AAPL has done a fine job of covering the entire price spectrum. Any snob appeal the iPod has vis-a-vis the other MP3 players would lie in its cool factor, i.e. cool vs. uncool. And to be perfectly clear, it's not about rich vs. poor in this instance.

Are you saying nobody cares about features, only looking "cool" thus anyone who doesn't buy an ipod is POOR?

Nope, never said that either. Sure, the features you have mentioned are important to some. But clearly the majority of MP3 buyers have spoken, and they feel they can do without these features in exchange for that special something in the iPod ... shall we say coolness? Again, it's not about the money.

The main point of my comment is that buying an MP3 player is a personal decision, unlike buying a computer for business. This thing called coolness is a major factor in that decision for a lot of people. Not everyone sits down and does a clinical analysis of technical features before choosing. A large part of their decision is based on emotion. And that's where the luxury car analogy comes into play. There are lots of valid reasons for choosing a solid, well-built, full-featured Camry. Then there's the SLR.

Just in case: don't worry if you prefer the Yugo. It's perfectly all right. To each his own, I say ;-)
