If the area will not promising, why limit its research? If we go down that path, and it is a dead end, so be it.

I can't speak for everyone on the left, but to me it smacks of the same thing as the 'intelligent design' vs evolution argument. There are those on the right who are cynically trying to create a wedge issue for their own earthly power grab. From a scientific point of view, it's a no brainer.

And, I think you've misapplied Ockham's Razor, which says that the simplest explanation is probably the best. The simplest explanation is that proponents see the potential benefits to themselves and their families, especially those who've had loved ones who could be helped (Michael J Fox, Nancy Reagan, etc).
