But you're missing the main point- when I go to the gym or walk or jog, i put my mp3 player in my pocket

Having a cool product doesn't mean you need to show it off. Sometimes just knowing you have one is good enough. Why do people pay enormous sums of money for paintings just to hide them in their homes? In certain cases, they don't even want people to know that they own these paintings.

Or paying twice the amount for Kingston ultra-mega-super ram when it's just rebranded Samsung chips

Somehow I have a hard time associating memory chips with cool. That said, I think Kingston has been around for many years, so there are enough people that want their products.

If you're trying to base apple's stock valuation on the vanity of stupid people, you're treading on pretty then ice in terms of revenue stability

Never said I was. However, capitalizing on the "vanity of stupid people" seems to work for some. Just ask Bernard Arnault.

Have you considered that sometimes people just want something nice in their lives and don't feel the need to be rational about it? With the iPod they can have this (and without falling into debt). At the end of the day, the device satisfies some unfathomable need in people, and they keep coming back for more. Apple is one of the few hardware companies today that understand this part of the human psyche and have successfully tapped into it.

Cool is not how it shows to others.

Cool is how it shows and performs to the buyer.

I don't give a crap if someone knows or doesn't know I have an iPod. But it's really cool how I can take my favorite audio and video podcasts anywhere I go.

Anyone here listen to Scott Sigler's podcast novels? I really enjoy them. His 4th novel is The Rookie - about a football player getting into the GFL (Galaxy Football League) about 500 years into the future. You can pick-up his podcasts on iTunes or go to:

scottsigler.podshow.com

BTW, just to let you all know, I can watch videos on my 5G 30GB iPod in full sun and still see the images and the colors. It surprised the hell out of me. I can't see the view screen on my Olympus camera when outside.
