BTW, if more corn are going to be produced, doesnt that mean more fertilizer has to be produced?

Even more than you might think.

It's my understanding that MW farmers are increasingly planting corn in the same fields in successive years rather than rotating with soybeans or other corps.

This requires even greater applications of fertilizer and pesticides than corn planted in rotation.
