One useful thing about aromatics is the double bonds mean slightly more energy for each unit of mass.

If I remember correctly, there was a political fight to add MBTE, and then a fight to get it out.

The efficency gains with higher compression are enormous, especially now with knock sensors and computers allowing maximum use of whatever the gasoline does, and tweaking the mixture.
