I am with you all the way on that one LC. Your type of intelligence and levelheadedness is what the human species needs to survive.

And that is a cold hard fact-lol.

"IMO you need people to take the radical environmental view to stand up against the development side. Whether or not I agree with them, I am very glad they are there to hold feet ot the fire."

Let me show you the other side of holding feet to the fire. Despite the ignorance and incompetence of everyone in Montana, the State has protected the natural environment to such an extent that Montana has become the envy of out of staters who want to come here and tell everyone how stupid and wrong they have been! This extends to kids who have been fed a steady diet from their grade school teachers on up and includes the mainstream media. The brainwashing results in some setting a personal goal to go out and save the world from the evil miners, loggers, oil men and ranchers who are raping the environment. They get their degree in biology or whatever, go to work for the forest service or the BLM and get into management positions. Along comes forest fire season and some of them are the people in charge. We will light a backfire here because the computer says we should (yes but the wind is blowing towards town!) or we will not employ Canadian water bombers because all that water could hurt wildlife if they are hit by it, or large dozers creating a fire break will cause damage to the ground, so we can not use them etc.etc.

Others will use the endangered species act. eg. in eastern Washington, some BLM employees pulled hair out of the stuffed Eastern canada lynx in the lobby of the BLM office and planted it in the forest. When they "found" it, they were able to shut down all the logging, mining, new grazing etc. in half the State, until an honest BLM scientist studying the DNA of the lynx hair figured there was something familiar about it and searched his records and was able to trace it back to the lynx in the lobby. apparently the BLM employees were promoted because their wrongdoing was outweighed by the dedication to their jobs that they had shown. meanwhile how many loggers and miners families went without when their jobs disappeared.

Some enviro groups will legally challenge every timber sale on public land, including appeals. Year long the Butte Hill (continental divide) looks a lot like Vermont's red maples in October due to the dead evergreens that are bug infested. The Forest service proposed cutting of the diseased trees have been over-turned in the appeals court on a technicality, and despite the amicus brief by the city of Butte stating that when the fire burns all the diseased trees, (a very likely occurence) the soil erosion will be into the lake/reservoir that serves as the source of the city's drinking water.

My neighbor has a patented claim that was brought to patent in the late 1880's. The BLM decided to declare a wilderness study area (WSA) of about 50 square miles despite the fact that their own studies found the area to be of "high mineral potential", and "very high mineral potential" Two years into the study it was concluded that the tract was not suitable for a WSA due to the preponderance of old roads in the area allowing access by local residents. 15 years later it is still a WSA. My neighbor can not use the road built 50 years ago because mining is not compatible with a WSA. There is no synthesis.

Everybody has been brain-washed into thinking that miners, loggers etc. are inherently evil. Common sense goes out the window. People do not look for science or technology to solve the problems. They just look to shut down mining, logging etc. The federal judges are appointed by the politicians. They go to the same elitist parties etc. and look down at, and make jokes about us Neanderthals in the resource industries. A technical argument, having nothing to do with the facts of the matter, from a Sierra Club lawyer, provides the judge with a place for him to hang his decision. In his heart he knows he has done the right thing because mining is evil and he sleeps well knowing he has done his part to save mankind!

I am on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Koan, but he is of like mind on this issue. He is a rare bird!
