Yes, I guess 'violent' was extremely relative back then. There were often clashes between civs, and factions. But the religious intolerance of European middle ages was unmatched in scope, ferocity, and longevity.

The move away from religious intolerance was not solely because of invasion from the Mongols. The Crusades also had an impact, as did later colonizations by European powers.

But, the Mongol invasions came at a crucial period, and this is when the Muslims lost the technological race.

Isn't it ironic how religious folk often decry the advance of technology, when often that advance is a main enabler of their ability to worship freely. Technology begets prosperity which seems to be a historical prerequisite for religious tolerance.
