Ah. thanks for pointing that out, it explains a lot: *an idea brought to fruition by a 230-member team in a creatively fervid overcrowded office space* Yes, I suppose it WAS designed by committee (a very big committee at that). I would love to have been there when the leader addressed the auditorium, eh office space, (as I imagine) asking how they can make it like the iPod and then when they started discussing the wheel design...
