I wonder if generosity is also linked to democracy. In less stable regime, it would seem that people might be generous locally but be reticent to give outside the community. I'd think there would always be some degree of uncertainty as to whether you would need that money for yourself down the road. In a democracy, I think people believe that there is less of a chance of some destabilization that would make them wish that money back.

Of course, that doesn't excuse the oil billionaires. It really seems harder to pry money out of people who have a lot, with some notable exceptions. Even Gates was tightfisted until he got married and tamed.

Yes, martial arts is great. We're all in it; my wife and I are red belts and due for black in a couple of years if it doesn't kill us first... :)
