By happiness quotient, the Filipinos has all beat. Happiness may indeed be a state of mind. One could be happy in the direst circumstances, but everything else being equal I would rather deal with my state of mind and also have access to all the creature comforts. By nanny per capita, HK is way up there. Whenever Bill Gates walks into any room, the average net worth of individuals in that room exceeds millons US$. By relishing-ly looking forward to bright future, China is coming on strong. When you make $2 a day and looking into the near future making $10 a day is a big deal. But it is like playing golf (which most Chinese will never get a chance to do), you can make the most progress getting to the pin from the tee. But the closer you get to the pin, the harder it gets. What is it you think you got? cars to support? strip malls to cruise? taxes to pay? doctors to try and not see? Yet another way to package potato chips? or is it the bankrupting-ly sad affair at the airport, without shoes and belt, holding a quart bag of toiletries, all lined up, waiting to be fondled, each in turn, and losing jewelry and dropping laptops in the sorry process, only to be able to eat common fare having paid top prices, served by folks who just lost their pension. Yes, we have problems. The rest of the world can study what happened to us and try to avoid the same mistakes. If they can do that, congratulations to them. It is unlikely many will avoid the same mistakes in their efforts to catch up. In the meantime we are going to forge ahead and perhaps we can make some more mistakes that the world can learn from. You think an election that merely protests is going to change the trend to inevitability? when have you seen a divided government do great things? why do you think a majority govt made up of the spendthrift and the ignorant can create value? why to you think the recent past is an indication of the distant future? Theoretically, a benign dictatorship is probably the most effective form of government. However I don't think there are too many people that will give that a try. What we have is a lot of checks and balance to stop the kind of stuff George W. Bush has tried to impose on us. The founding fathers anticpated all this. It is just fortunate the George W. Bush is lazy and incompetent. Otherwise he could have done a lot more damage. Again, we are the gold standard. Other countries have to study what we have tried or are trying to do and learn from our mistakes and come up with a better model to form a government. Until something better comes along, we are still the gold standard.Do you really think that USA was made great by the sort of folks it has in government now, believing in the sort of nonsense they do, and acting out the fantasies they do? Do you know American history? We are only a little over two hundred years old. We are still a work in progress. Give us a few good administrations and we will be fine, but if we get another George W Bush, that will put us deeper in the hole (metaphorically) and make it that much more difficult for us. In any case show me a more competitive model or form of government. News flash: there is no entitlement and birthright. There is only one program of worth, comprised of hard work, thrift, family values, private property, education, and respect for others, including cultures and civilizations. Look into the dusty books and musty archives, and rediscover the truth. . As Mohammed Ali (the boxer) once said, "everybody has a plan until they step into the ring and gets hit".
