China ethanol demand to grow 20 pct/yr over next 5 yrs - Deutsche Bank
11.03.2006, 06:07 AM

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Deutsche Bank said it expects China's consumption of renewable energy to grow 10-36 pct a year in the next five years, with demand for ethanol rising 20 pct per year during the period.

'China aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 16 pct of total energy consumption in 2020 from seven pct in 2005,' the bank said in a research report, citing the China Renewable Energy Law that came into effect on Jan 1 this year.

The report said that hydro power is the most commonly used alternative energy source in China, followed by nuclear, wind, solar and biomass energy.

But despite hydro power being the largest source of alternative energy, accounting for 15.1 pct of the nation's power consumption in 2005, China only makes use of 24 pct of its hydro potential, much lower than the 60 pct average among developed nations, the report said.

By 2010, China plans to have a total hydropower capacity of 160 gigawatts (GW), which the country hopes to increase to 300 GW by 2020, the note said.

China's wind power sector has been dominated by imported turbines so far, which have a market share of roughly 80 pct, the report said.

But the report said that the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently indicated that at least 70 pct of wind turbine components will be required to be produced domestically in the future, a move that has accelerated investment in the wind market.

At 2.7 pct of the country's primary energy consumption, China must raise its natural gas/total consumption ratio ninefold to reach the same ratio as the US, or five- to eightfold to reach the same ratio of Japan, the report said.

The NDRC estimates that consumption of the low-pollutant energy source will rise by six to eight pct by 2010, the report added.
