big post with lots of thoughts ..

I'll respond to a few of the points over a couple of respond posts.

quote

>Why do medical marijuana advocates assert every pothead is "self-medicating"?<

Did I do that?

As I recall a few days ago, you in essence did suggest that. If you want to disassociate yourself from that now, you can say so.

end quote

I'm no longer sure how to discuss your statement. I thought that "pothead", as you were using the word, referred to addicts as defined by the science of today. Self medication is one way to explain addiction.

However, it seems that you may have a larger group in mind when you talk about "potheads."

Are you talking about people who smoke every day? Is a person that smokes every day an addict, to your thinking? Does that change if a doctor tells them to smoke every day?

Is someone who used every drug they can still a "pothead?" Or have they become something else? Are the "mixheads" still a part of your "most potheads?"

Also .. you know people that drink one or two drinks every day. Some people would call them addicted. I think you do not see this as problem drinking or addiction. I would tend to agree with you there.

I also think that you would believe any one that smokes every day to be a "pothead." And that every one of these people consume pot until they are ready to pass out. Have you ever considered that someone that smokes every day may only wish one or two puffs?

Is a regular light user a "pothead?"

Or is "pothead" simply a point of view. ie I favor pot so that makes me a "pothead."

"Does that mean we should think of people who get high on weed daily the same way we think of people who get drunk every day?"

Again .. you don't seem to be able to conceive of someone taking just one or two puffs a day.

>I think the best arguments for it would be:<

How about this one:

Every place they made it legal, consumption went down.

Where would that be? That would be interesting. And why consumption would go down is puzzling.

end quote

Why? Something about loosing a mystique or something like that.

Data? I remember reading that .. somewhere .. I think that I'll skip on the documentation for this one. Consider it withdrawn if you wish.

I thought you might find this guy interesting.

I had the privilege of hearing Irvin Rosenfeld speak today.

Small quote:

November 20, 2002 will mark the twentieth anniversary of my use of medical Cannabis provided by the federal government. This is the longest period of the seven living American medical patients who now receive medical marijuana from the federal government.

I have had a very successful career as an award-winning stockbroker and a rewarding, high quality of life. That life would have been utterly impossible without my use of this medicine. I would have been unable to serve my clients and contribute to my community and the economy. Indeed, I would have been an enormous economic drain, consuming vast quantities of medical resources -- if I were to have survived this many years.

end quote

Rosenfeld was testifying, today, in front of a committee of the House of Representatives for the State of Michigan.

The topic was a bill to amend the controled substance act (of Michigan) to allow for medical marijuana.

He testified immediately following the testimony of a representative of the FDA.

The FDA rep lied. Many times. One of his lies was that "There have been no studies showing that marijuana has any medical benefit."

Rosenfeld got on the stand and asked "Why hasn't the FDA studied me? I've been smoking nine to 15 marijuana cigarettes per day for the last 35 years. I would be dead if I hadn't."

The FDA dude was already out in the hallway with reporters. Wasn't the least bit interested in what Irvin had to say.
