Removing the gasoline tax wouldn't do to much to encourage domestic production. It might have a slight effect in that direction, if it increases demand for gasoline and if that additional demand creates and increase in the price of oil, but a lot of that oil will still be from overseas.

Which doesn't mean that I opposing (or supporting) removing the tax, or supporting (or opposing) taxing ethanol.

Well I suppose I'd remove the ethanol subsidies first and then decide where to go from there.
