He was a tenured professor so he had a reason to stay quiet. But when he saw Hitler invading other countries he started to speak out and got quite a following. He was rounded up by the SS. They tried to get a confession out of him but he didn't confess. After they shot him they were moving him and this note fell out of his pocket with the above written on it in german.
