Hi Jim.

re: "The health of the underlying economy, including debt, will determine whether or not these demands can be met, and at what price. Do we have the money? Can we get it? Are we masters of our own fate?"

Last night on Comic Relief a segment was devoted to a musician from New Orleans who gave his account of the ordeal that he and his family endured during their escape from Katrina. A long story short, he concluded his presentation by sending out a plea to G.W. Bush, asking that one day's spending on the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure be diverted to the rebuilding of New Orleans infrastructure. Admittedly, he was playing to the audience's emotions, but in the process he also made a very good point.

As things stand today, a hefty bill for the reconstruction of Iraq still awaits us and our children, which could have been spent more fruitfully elsewhere. In the end, it really does boil down to priorities and having to live with the consequences of our own actions.
