Republicans have destroyed two countries and have tried to destroy us. Just by getting elected, Dems have staunched at least some of this heinous Republican activity. That is a victory all by itself: stopping Republicans from destroying the USA. Finally armed with subpoena power, Dems and the rest of us get a look at what the hell is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since Republicans have lied-lied-lied about both situations, we don't know what the real situation on the ground is. Once we can assess that situation, then the American public will have a better idea of what the options are: they will range from truly horrendous to just merely horrendous. THERE ARE NO GOOD OPTIONS IN IRAQ THANKS TO REPUBLICAN INCOMPETENCE. Since we do not have the troop strength required to stabilize Iraq as a whole, I suspect Poppy's guys, the old Dems, the current Dems, Warner and other Republicans will come to the conclusion that redeployment out of the killing fields is the only solution. This is as much to help the USA as to help Iraq. They will also advocate dealing with Syria and, gasp, Iran as well as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait et al to try to keep the conflict within Iraq's borders and not have it consume the entire region. I suspect they will also secretly arm and support a new strongman, possibly Allawi, who is friendly to US corporate interests and try to choke off support to Maliki who cannot distance himself from al Sadr. They will be happy if this new Saddam brutally crushes all resistance in the country but gets the oil fields back up and running and supplying ExxonMobil et al. Republicans have made a killing off of war profiteering and oil. They aren't unhappy with the situation in Iraq, they just want to win another election so as to continue the dual plunder from the US Treasury and Iraqi oil. The best result from Iraq that we can hope for in the near term: a permanent Republican minority.
