I think that maybe the arguement is coming down to semantics.

A person who is frequently "lucky" probably makes his own luck. OTOH, drawing to an inside straight is pretty "lucky," while having one's house hit by a meteorite is rather "unlucky."

"Luck" is just a colloquial term for "improbable." When it is used as an explanation for a series of outcomes, it is probably misapplied.
