You may be right about the republicans drifting away from their base, but the very same thing can be said about the liberals, and that has been going on for many years, they have gone so far to the left, I cannot even recognize them any more... I was a democrat all my life, but for the past 10 years or more they have drifted so far to the left that I can no longer give them my vote... they betrayed the very people they claim to represent... in fact, they don't care about anyone except to get re-elected... they've been scaring the elderly about how the Republicans will take away social security, meanwhile it was the liberals who did just that by taxing the hell out of it... the liberals only want you oppressed and poor and living a miserable existence, this way they can be your champion... if you succeed on your own, then you only show them to be useless... this is their complaint against Colin Powell and Condi Rice, two blacks who made it into the inner circle of the White House without affirmative action (and the liberals call Bush a racist?)... I could go on, so to hold only the republicans for drifting from their base is a bit one sided...
