"People now-a-days nearly *always* express Authoritarian impulses by talking in some kind of a code... you have to 'read between the lines' to see it"

Do you mean like when Ann Coulter says she is not a big fan of the first amendment? Was that 'code' or just a joke? <g>

"But, it's still pretty easy to see: when people's knee-jerk prescription to most any big or small problem is to propose a bigger, stronger, more intrusive/restrictive/prohibitionist King/Executive/'Fearless Leader' as a solution to the problem, or to 'make the trains run on time' --- then the Authoritarian impulse is fairly easy to discern."

Speaking of the old "making the trains run on time" analogy, I wonder how many people today realize that Benito Mussolini, the original european fascist, made his bones with breaking the Italian labor chaos surrounding the train system....but much more importantly, Mussolini was lionized by the press and politicians worldwide as the brilliant, young Mr. Fix-it of unmanagable Italy. For a time he was held out as the shining example of enlightened rulers...

We think nowadays of the later Benito...arms crossed while the chin nods and nods....a silly characterization of totalitarian rule and Hitler's inept junior partner. But back in the mid-1930's Benito was the senior partner and much more respected as a "real" leader by the World.

Then he started to believe his press clippings.
