I've had to put down two very good friends and I know it's not easy to think about someone else taking their place. But I do know that I'm a much better person for having a place in my heart and home for one that has no place to go.

Our two that we have now came from the SPCA. Someone didn't want them or couldn't keep them due to circumstances. I can't think of how my life would be without them here. I know for a fact that I am a much better person because of them. I know it's not easy to pick up and go because of them but I do know, it's great knowing that they will be there when I get back.<g>

Pets aren't for everyone, I'm not trying to push pet adoption off on anyone. I'm just speaking of my own experiences.<g>

What to do with their dog?

Trade it in for a cat and a litter box. A cat's instinct for reliably using the litter box with virtually no training is a miracle of Nature. And despite their aloofness and so forth, they're pretty good company.

Ken, I had the best dog in the world from 1972 until 1988 when we had to put her down. She went everywhere with me and was never kenneled until late in her life. Big mistake.

My advice would be, get your dog used to being at the kennel so it's no a stressful situation for them when you have to go away. You can take a guilt-free vacation and the dog will do quite well once used to being in the kennel.

<<Besides, when I had to put my last dog down a little of me died that day, as well.>>

I'd say get a miniature Schnauzer. Small, have hair instead of fur and don't shed. Live forever. Dumb as a rock and so annoying the day it dies will be a happy day.
