Nixon campaigned on ending the war. He had a secret plan to end the war. The plan failed like all occupations eventually fail and he cut and ran.

Nixon should have cut and ran in 1969, not 1973. If he had, about 25,000 Americans and about 300,000 human beings would not have been killed, and all those deaths didn't change the inevitable outcome one iota. By 1969, that war was lost, just as by 2004-2005 the debacle in Iraq was a lost cause.

There is no realistic plan left in Iraq which can give us anything even remotely ressembling a "victory", yet Bush still crows about "victory". That is a very clear case where he's either very dishonest or very out-of-touch with reality.

In fact, we should have quit Iraq after the first election. The military did their job. Time for the Iraqis to stand up. Or kill themselves and ruin everything. Their choice. Our troops cannot be in the middle of it. If they remain so, thousands more Americans will die for a lost cause.
