Collective wisdom? Herd instinct! A group can act against their own self interest. If the IG Metall (German steel workers union was not that strong, that group of workers would be, today, in a better situation that they are. Their strength sapped the industry that provided them with jobs. Unionized workers, forced companies to apply rules that in the end forced those companies to move abroad and there are no jobs left. They exchanged gains for two generations against gains forever.
