It's not yet sunk in the return to natural size. British Empire was gone at the end of WW I. It only sunk in at the end of WW II, i.e., almost thre decades hence.

If the incumbent, tries to hold a grip in the unatural size, the more it will lose through attrition and the faster the return.
If the incumbent decides to manage the return, the longer it will be the return road.

For example: the adventure in Iraq, has put the US closer to its natural size. Why? because it lost the good will other countries had. It spent political capital.

You can imagine all kinds of future scenarios, and it will be very difficult to pinch one in which a majority of countries will align behind an US initiative.
