She suggested we all purchase a gift that would be usable by any one of us. Gifts would be set on a table and one would start out opening a gift and if the person wanted to keep the gift, the next person would open a gift and keep and if anyone wanted any of the gifts already opened, they could take it from them and substitute another gift.

I mentioned this to my daughter last night and she grinned and said, "Oh, like a white elephant party!" She loved it and then embellished upon it. One year we could do anything that had to do with categories - for example, books: a book, used book, book gift cards, gifts from a book store (games, puzzles, book ends).
Then she suggested as a category, used: Used anything... one could go to Good Will, garage sales, rummage places. It might be jewelry that one no longer uses (pkg marked lady or mens), an early family picture of the grandparents, a treasured doll, and old scrapbook, used books, etc

Imagination is free to run wild :)
