They sure are -- another way to say it -- what starts off screwed up has a way of ending up screwed up. The invasion of Iraq was screwed up from day one. You are right, we are in no position to "restore order". On the other hand, hopes for a regional political solution are not exactly an odds-on bet either. It is an unbelievable mess, and about as far from serving our interests as it can be. The carnage is sickening -- but the politics in the US that led up to this are pretty disgusting as well. In the end it will be up to the American people to decide whether or not we have the intelligence and the character to play a lead role facing the issues that bedevil us -- so far it seems that the ipod generation has its headphones on loud and simply hopes this will all go away. But it won't
