It's not that Americans are different from people in the rest of the world - after all, that's where they came from. I've thought about this a lot (I lived there for 13 years) and my best explanation is that because the US is both so big and so rich and powerful, it's possible for Americans to get the impression that the rest of the world doesn't matter. In fact it doesn't matter to them, on the whole. There is also the great influence of commercial interests, especially in the media.

To the extent that ordinary Americans hear anything of Noam Chomsky (which isn't much - you won't see him on network TV) they probably think he's just crazy. In fact, living surrounded by people who deny the obvious _has_ made him a little bit crazy.

The other thing that needs to be said is that Americans are not unique in their ignorance of world affairs. I think this is the case with the masses in all countries. But because of the position of the US in the world, we tend to expect better of it. We will be disappointed.
