The north south pull is very strong. I spent a lot of time in upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire mainly skiing in the winter. We took back road border crossings, one guy that often recognized you. My folks even had a place in Lake Placid. We watched the local affiliates US in Montreal so we saw all the local commercials for Lake Placid, Poland Springs Maine.. I knew lots of Americans then, good folks, bad folks... mainly just folks.. At 28 I got married and moved to Ontario because my wife's opportunities were much better here. You know it was more foreign in Ontario than then the New England states for me by a good margin. I've travelled much of Canada and extensively the US eastern seaboard. Only Newfoundland in Canada remains unvisited. I've talked to folks from Digby Neck to Victoria, Sioux Lookout, Winnipeg, Vancouver.. Moncton, Rivieres des Loups, Abrahms Village (Acadian PEI, played cow bingo there ;o), St-Felicien.. (I had a girlfriend from there and that's PQ country :O), Drumheller, Edmonton, Calgary, (OK I passed through Saskatchewan a few times but I musta blinked and missed the locals..) So yeah.. except for maybe Bonavista.. this land is my land... Point is.. I don't find any more cogent thinking or world view up here than you are talking about wrt to Americans.. eg.. Harper and Flaherty are able to pull the trust shenanigans off because so many fall for the spin that trust owners are mostly rich tax evaders (of course the retail investor is the one paying the freight).. Is that an informed populace ? naw... As apathetic and uninformed as many Americans are .. so are Canadians... Sure we know more about them than they do about us.. but isn't that to be expected ? I have many friends that eschew Canadian content for things American... (all too common in Canada) is that because the Americans are forcing them ? And better .... how many Canadians want the CRTC to stop forcing Canadian content upon us ? US Football or Canadian Football. see how sad the Grey Cup was this year ? American movies or Canadian ? and on and on... in late summer 2000, I spent some time in China,Beijing Hangzhou, no Hong Kong.. not an if this is Tuesday it must be Belgium type of tour but some on the ground wandering around time.. I stopped in a KFC, and a McDonalds so placate my daughter... and my God.. !! Starbucks at least twice... (There were no Tims :o) Who is forcing these things upon the Chinese ? Is there a new gunboat diplomacy ? No. The world is fascinated with America, jealous ? maybe some malcontents... but definitely fascinated.. I don't make the rules and I'm not making this stuff up.. You know the biggest problem with democracy (IMHO) is that everyone gets a vote.. paradoxically that is also its greatest strength... things always need to get REAL bad before folks wake up though ... as to the world bank et al... I need only look to the ever obsequious Tony Blair... or any number of willing participants in the Coalition of the blankety blank.. mostly trying to curry favour with the US by lending mostly token support to legimatize the expedition.. ... shame .. SHAME on all of them.. There is a lot of blame to go around and a lot of deserving recipients... just my take... Al BTW.. Nov 8 2000 Posts 39 ... whether we agree or disagree... I'm flattered... I see you don't give those posts out lightly :O) regards Al
