Peter, If the Indians had found oil, somehow figured out what it was good for, and belonged to the same tribe, they would have used it to better the lives of all of the tribe. Those of the same tribe, were quite loyal to each other, and were concerned more about the good of the tribe, than personal wealth, or possessions. If they were not of the same tribe, all hell may have broke out.

Another thing about the mindset of Indians, is that they preferred the life they led as hunters, herders, and farmers, in the old ways, and were not interested in progress, which was one of their down falls. All they really wanted, was to keep their hunting grounds, but as in the Black Hills of South Dakota, gold was found, and the Indians didn't stand a chance.

Now, they have no problems, and are getting back at the white man in legal ways. I remember when the government wanted to widen a road through the Mescalero Apache reservation, and the chief allowed them to do so as long as they made him an airstrip that would take a 327, and use only Mescalero workers.
Now they own ski slopes, hotels, and a resort.

After that, many other tribes are happy to take the white man's money in casinos.
