Honda Planning Hybrid Fit Subcompact
Posted on Monday, March 13, 2006 (EST)

The hybrid Fit subcompact with a 1.0 liter engine and a fuel economy similar to the Toyota (TM) Prius is expected to hit the market in 2007. Unlike contemporary Hybrids, the Fit hybrid will cost just marginally more than the gasoline only version.

Business Week quoting a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) has reported that Honda may come forward with a hybrid version of its popular Fit subcompact in 2007. Powered by a 1.0 liter engine it will deliver a fuel economy similar to the Toyota (TM) Prius - average 55 miles per gallon. Honda, has yet to confirm the report.

The non hybrid Honda Fit is one of Honda's hottest selling models in Asia and Europe. A 1.5 liter 109 horsepower 4-cylinder VTEC engine version of the subcompact 5-door hatchback is set to go on-sale in the U.S. in April. It will feature a 5-speed manual transmission or an available, first in segment, 5-speed automatic transmission, and over 90 cubic feet of passenger volume with multiple seating and cargo configurations.

The Fit features an electronic Drive-by-Wire throttle control, which provides quick throttle response, smooth automatic transmission shifts (on automatic transmission models) and precise fuel delivery to the engine. It employs an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that contributes to higher fuel economy since engine power is not needed to operate a hydraulic system.

Estimated city/highway fuel economy ratings of 33/38 miles per gallon for the gasoline burning Fit is expected to be among the highest ratings in the subcompact 5-door hatchback class.

Honda is expected to cut costs of the Hybrid version by using a single electric motor, unlike the two in a Totyoa Prius, as well as half the number of batteries.
