Saddam's totals for kills over his tenure as leader of Iraq are very small compared to what is happening now.

How in the world do you know this? Outsiders all thought there were WMDs in Iraq, and there were none. With that level of insight into what was going on in Iraq during Saddam's regime why do you think you have a reliable number for the number of Iraqi on Iraqi deaths during Saddam's regime?

And why would you exclude the Iran-Iraq war - don't those deaths matter? Do you also exclude the Iraqis and Kuwaitis killed during Saddam's invasion of Kuwait (for some strange reason)?

Iraq is a violent messed up place to live because enough of the people there are violent messed up people willing to kill and murder each other rather than live in tolerance and peace, and that's certainly not because of George Bush. He didn't even know the difference between Slovenia and Slovakia when he became President, he didn't cause the sectarian hatred and violence that is characteristic of the "tribes" of Iraq.
