Goldman Sachs analyst Henry King noted in a report issued by the company on November 24 that motherboard shipments may shrink by 1% on quarter and 8% on year to 29.8 million units in the fourth quarter. King said that the market is "overlooking" the weakness in fourth quarter motherboard shipments and that the upcoming quarter should also be below the historical average.

AMD accelerates introduction of 65-nm microprocessors

The Semiconductor Reporter
November 27, 2006

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is slated to introduce its first 65-nm Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors on Dec. 5, the Commercial Times reported today. Although the first 65-nm AMD processors were widely expected to be unveiled sometime next month, the news service said the firm had accelerated the launch in order to start producing more processors per wafer with the new process to overcome a shortage of chips.

AMD is expected to debut four processors, code-named Brisbane, in the 65-nm Athlon 64 X2 series. Model number 5000+ will be specified to run at 2.6 GHz, with the 4800+ at 2.5 GHz and the 4400+ at 2.3-GHz. The Athlon 64 X2 4000+ will be introduced at 2.1 GHz.

The Commercial Times said additional Brisbane 65-nm processors will be unveiled in the second quarter of 2007. This will include a model 5400+ to run at 2.8 GHz and the 5200+ at 2.7 GHz.
