That's not unusual.

Mud layers above the twin A-154 pipes went undetected at Diavik, and added to the mineral resource once mining started. They had a grade of about half what the actual kimberlite had.

The washing process would apply to any of the material, weathered or competent kimberlite, or mud layers above. It's all a matter of removing the material too small to contain any commercial diamonds before trucking it long distances, or putting it through a plant.
