To my great surprise, the politicians here made a huge commitment to upgrading higher education in the state during the Boom. Their main focus was to have some world class universities and to diversify the state economy from just oil and agriculture. Even during the Bust, they kept investing as much as they could. They were mostly successful, the state economy has a much wider base and TU and A&M are excellent universities. But the crowd that came in with Dubya are focussed now on cutting taxes and promoting the needs of the national Republican party. So they are cutting state support for the universities and have put them on the road to becoming essentially private. Which is a huge mistake.

Nearly everything these people do tends to have a negative impact. I know conspiracy theories are mostly about paranoia but in this case.............
