Without the draft, the american people are content to go Christmas shopping. The level of opposition to this current war would have led to at least as many protest as in vietnam except we now have a volunteer army. Even the anti war kids are wrapped up in ipods and video games. Other than hating bush for a variety of reasons, some justified, some not, they really dont give a crap. When i am being honest with myself, like clinton it was the draft that moved me to the streets on vietnam. Volunteer army is far superior but it makes more likely that foreign adventures will occur. Having said that vietnam occurred anyway and with a large draft and a 500k force. Go figure. Another conundrum wrapped in a quagmire.

Here's a model .... Compulsory Service: All eligible men and women are drafted at age 18. Men serve for three years, women for 21 months.* Deferments may be granted to qualified students at institutions of higher education. New immigrants may be deferred or serve for shorter periods of time, depending on their age and personal status on entering the country. Reserve Duty: Upon completion of compulsory service each soldier is assigned TO a reserve unit. Men up age 51 serve 39 days year period time which can be extended in times emergency. Recent policy has been reduce the burden whenever possible and reservists who have served combat UNITS may now discharged at 45. Career Military Service: Veterans of compulsory service meeting current IDF needs may sign up as career officers or NCOs. The career service constitutes the command and administrative backbone of the IDF. Graduates of officers' or pilots' schools or special military technical schools are required to sign on for periods of career service.
