I am still testing fragrance and tossing some that bother me - sneezing, headache, and/or rapid heartbeat. I have learned that "most modern, commercially-produced fragrances contain an estimated sixty to ninety-five percent synthetic aroma compounds, many of them derived from petroleum." And ~ Toxic chemicals linked to birth defects are being found at alarming levels in women of childbearing age. These same chemicals are being added to popular cosmetics and beauty aids, from Poison perfume to Arrid Extra Extra Dry deodorant. Manufacturers use these chemicals, known as phthalates (tha-lates), to add flexibility and help dissolve other ingredients. But phthalates have been shown to damage the lungs, liver and kidneys, and to harm the developing testes of offspring. While Europe has banned these pthalates, as of November 2002, the US Cosmetics Ingredients Review panel said phthalates are "safe as currently used," a ruling vigorously contested by health advocates and environmentalists who say the panel failed to conduct a thorough and credible study of the available scientific evidence. nottoopretty.com
