Sometimes the definition of crime varies depending on one's perspective. For plains Native Americans wasting precious buffalo resources was more than just a crime, it was a sin. White man slaughtered them by the hundreds and took what they wanted and left the rest to rot.

An intra racial version of the battle happened later when ranchers clashed with farmers. Native Americans had lived for multitudes of generations with open ranges; to have someone stealing their land must have been wrong in their minds. Thus their actions were justified.

Settlers certainly didn't see harm in doing what was necessary for their survival and sometimes just for their comfort.
