"The righties would probably cheer a Shiite / Sunni "clash of civilizations" in the ME. They would think it was wonderful because they just don't get historical repercussions."

Yeah, I know. Just like they had CNN tuned in and cheered when Israel went into Lebanon. When that didn't work out, they blamed the media. Too many people don't understand the meaning of the reputed Chinese curse of "may you live in interesting times". What is interesting and exciting to read about in a history book, usually means a lot of people died and/or had their lives totally disrupted. The more radical the changes, the greater the disruptions. While what shakes out might be better for everyone, and it very well might not, I don't relish the idea of my sons or my nieces and nephews dying on some battlefield somewhere. Or "mostly" coming back. Anybody else, for that matter, but stuff happening to friends and relatives has a more direct impact than reading about it in the paper.
