"There ought to be a way to get rid of an incompetent supreme leader to keep him/her from doing too much damage. " According to the procedure, the way to deal with a true incompetent is to have Congress and the courts provide checks on the damage the executive could do. That part of the system is totally dysfunctional at the moment.

Proposed amendment for Presidential Recall To recall a sitting President, each state votes, either in their state legislature or by public ballot, whether a recall election is to be called or not. Once the vote is finalized, it cannot be rescinded as long as it resulted from a legal election. If a two thirds majority of the states vote in the affirmative, a recall election via public ballot is to be scheduled no later than 3 months after the two thirds majority is reached. If a simple majority affirms the President is to be recalled, the President is then removed from office. A similar procedure is authorized for the Vice President and those elections can be held concurrent with the Presidential elections.
