My understanding is that the main driver of Hez pulling their 6 ministers out of the government was an attempt to block Lebanon's government from approving the UN investigation into the Hariri murder. Hez wanted essentially veto power over government decisions, didn't have enough representatives to get the veto power, so they were going to try to topple the government before it could approve the UN investigation. Then the other guy got killed last week, perhaps throwing a wrench into their plans. I think that's one issue among many which all lead to Hezbollah having a bigger role in the gov't: "Hezbollah, which the U.S. State Department labels a terrorist organization, is demanding more representation in the Siniora cabinet to give it veto power and the ability to divert the government from friendship with the United States and France. The party's militia fought a 33-day war with Israel and insists its defense of the country justifies its quest for greater power. Matul Haraki, 16, a student at today's demonstration, said, ``I saw the war and we made sacrifices. We want to change things from their foundation."bloomberg.com when Syria was forced to pull its troops out of Lebanon, why didn't Hezbollah refuse to participate in the gov't at that time as a form of protest? I don't know. Personally I don't really understand why anyone in Lebanon is "pro-Syria". There seems to be a very significant pro-Syrian population in Lebanon. Syria may give some of the "pro-Syria" groups funding, but what makes a Lebanese prefer the Syrian government to the Lebanese government, I have no idea... Lebanese and Syrian affairs have been intertwined for a long time. If I remember correctly, at one time Lebanon was part of Syria. Syria has taken advantage of Lebanon's multi religious make up and always found a group within the country that was open to its help. Currently, it appears that group is Hezbollah.
