Actually, there was plenty of information before the war that would have led any rational leader to the conclusion that invasion would be a strategic blunder. The information came from the leaders of Iraq's neighbors, who know Iraq best. ALL of them from Saudi Arabia to Turkey warned Bush that an Iraq invasion would lead to enormous problems. The Turkish foreign minister compared it publicly to "opening Pandora's box." The Saudi foreign minister said to Bush that invasion would be "solving one problem and creating five more" -- an eye opening observation from an avowed enemy of Saddam. A Kuwaiti citizen interviewed by the NYT before the invasion summed up his feelings this way: "Iraqis are tough."
