I don't think Bush ever aspired to world statesman status. Like Bill Gates and MSFT, he wanted the world to fall in line behind him but he seems very unequipped to deal with give and take diplomacy outside that framework, much like his token efforts at bipartisan cooperation in Congress.

I don't think he "gets it" as far as the changing scene in the ME is concerned; as a result, the US will be pushed more and more to the sidelines as the various actors there cut their own deals. Bush and his crowd are still convinced that they "transform reality" instead of just reacting to it. That stopped working long ago.
