I've filed my own taxes from day one (and passed my one audit with flying colors) and have been self employed for nearly the last 30 years, degreed in finance, and was the tax shelter coordinator for the brokerage firm branch that I was associated with. Things are different when you have more invested in your life than a lunch box. Reagan's tax changes put a real hurt on some of the companies doing limited partner tax shelters. Some went out of business within a couple of years, but dropping that 70% top marginal tax bracket was one of the best things to ever happen to this country.
