"We started this mess. We did not have to invade Iraq. We let a bunch of ideologues with infantile but nevertheless grandiose notions run the war. Iraq is now a tinder box ready to explode and inflame the region.

We have a moral obligation to prevent a catastrophe. Our military presence there alone prevent all out open warfare. We have our green zones in major cities. We have road blocks around known militia strongholds. We can prevent battalion or division sized combat from ever taking place."

Barring our inventing a time machine and going back and NOT invading Iraq, there isn't any stopping the Iraqi civil war. Your notion that we can stop it is, in it's own way, as wrongheaded as W's idea of invading the place. We can't even control Baghdad NOW with the bulk of our troops there! We'll just get MORE Americans killed and only PERHAPS postpone and prolong the inevitable.
