Yeah I grew up on a midwestern farm. Even back then we were pouring on the chemicals with abandon. The advice from the suppliers was 'the more the better'. I can only imagine what they're doing now. We farmed cattle that ate mostly grass and hay, a little oats now and then, pastureland fertilized with a manure spreader, basically recycled system, except for the oil we burned in the tractors. Typical grocery store milk now bears little resemblance to that kind of milk. One of the reasons I shop at Whole Foods,organic milk, same price locally as industrial milk.
No big supplier in the food chain is going to be perfect, but we vote with our wallets every day, and in addition to some local farmers markets, Whole Foods is the best alternative I've seen.. here locally, at least.
