I think 4x4 is mostly a push towards more penetration in the workstation space and less so to target gamers.

AMD is quite well aware that four and even more so eight cores make little sense in gaming at this point, whereas they can be vastly beneficial in workstations.

They won't turn down gamers' money, of course, who want to have bragging rights to some real bad-ass, dual-socket, 1 kW power supply monster.

There is a difference between "want" and "need". 4 cores now, and 8 cores next year is overkill. But 4x4 is about more than just the cores. It is about a huge amount of memory and I/O bandwidth. Nobody has ever done this on the desktop before.
