I think Canada would be better served with a European Common market style association rather than the present confederation. Natural trade flows are north and south rather than east and west, It might be hard for a time for the provinces presently getting transfer payments, But the chance to determine their own destiny, and pay their own bills might be worth it. Land claims could be settled locally, rather than allowing the Federal government to use them as pension benefits for old political hacks.

I quite agree that small countries can do quite well. Their small size allows them to reap exaggerated benefits from low tax rates and deregulation as they siphon business and the money of the rich off of larger countries. If Canada were smart enough, we could be doing this already, based on our small size compared to the US. Even better if chronically demanding and underperforming regions of the country were not burdening us.

Shopping this season, I am annoyed that almost everything bought online is cheaper in the US, and many products are unavailable here even to order from the US. Most motor vehicles are currently 10-15% higher priced in exchange adjusted terms in Canada than the US as well. Time for us to see some benefits from our smaller size, like countries such as Ireland have been smart enough to capitalize on.
