PS2 came out way before XBox and was cheaper at $300. They are now way late and way more expensive. That is a big difference. You can buy a PC or laptop for what they are charging now. XBox and Wii will have too much of a lead for PS3 to catch up.

"Yet PS2 turned out to be the undisputed leader in the game console market."

But, as RobertG points out, the dynamics were different. XBox 360 has beat PS3 to market by a year. PS3 is a lot more expensive than its competitors. The Blu-Ray media is really, really expensive. Titles are extremely expensive to develop, and so on. Now Sony might be able to overcome all of this, but it isn't going to be easy. It certainly isn't a slam dunk.
