Strangely enough the 10-year sunset provision may have given the Bush return-of-Clinton-Rubin's-tax-heist a more permanent life. The Dems started looking at preserving their majorities 15 seconds after their data guys told them they had won both houses. Their actions in collaring the HBC and other radical elements in their party (at least for now) indicate that they have made at least part of that shift back to the mainstream that I have been predicting they would need in order for the party to survive.

The most visible way they could yell "We don't deserve to share power" at the independents would be to let the tax cuts expire-and risk another Clinton/Rubin deflationary disaster in the process. That, and surrendering Iraq, are the two radioactive actions they have shown signs of recognizing.

I would speculate that the tax cut expiration may have had a higher probability with hypocrites like "Jungle Chuck" Grassley and "Bridge to Nowhere" Stevens babbling insanely away, like Patsy Mckee, about leaving debt to future generations (and led by economic illiterate Mad Cow McCain.) When the Republicans finally get back in, enough time will have passed that they can purge their OWN party of the "Rockefeller" RINOS, and the operatives who keep recommending that they support them despite the constant back-stabbing.

So I look for the tax cuts to be around for a few more years. (Though trusting the domestic enemy about anything is, in itself, risky.)
