I have limited evidence to support the fact that the majority of the Shiites want us there. However, that is what my friends in the Armed forces are telling me. They say that the majority of the people support the Shiite security position and the US troops trying to contain the violence.

It makes sense to me if these are the people that were oppressed by Saddam Hussein and the Sunni Baathists. More recently, I have read many articles suggesting the US troops were gaining more confidence from the Sunnis who are terrified of Shiite retaliation. There is some logic in the fact that the US troops are the only thing keeping the Shiites from utterly ravaging the Sunni minority at this point.

I guess the question is whether or not the US is serving a productive purpose in Iraq. I don't think all of our troops are over there doing bodily harm to anyone other than a small handful of insurgents they meet and kill in combat. Whether they are Shia militia killing Sunnis or Al Quaeda jihadis killing Shia, it is very difficult for the Iraqi security force to fight the terrorists head on until they attack.
