No way PCs replace gaming consoles.

PCs have the advantage of extreme resolution (which isn't even much of a factor anymore with the new consoles capable of HD resolution), but the architecture is not optimized for gaming, whereas consoles are. As it stands, a PC that can match PS3's graphical capabilities (not to mention the PS3's Blu-ray capability) will cost you far far more than $500. I'm not even sure $500 will get you Nvidia's top graphics card.

PC gaming is increasingly becoming a niche market. Certain genres will continue to thrive on PCs (e.g. MMORPGs ala World of Warcraft and real time strategy games). But developers are generally designing games with consoles in mind first, and then simply porting them over to PCs.

PCs will always have bleeding edge graphical capability, but it will cost you a *very* pretty penny.
